We had a history of breeding and owning Dachshunds throughout our lives. Being an Army family, we went back and forth as being pet owners. While stationed in Italy, we decided to become pet parents again and adopted Laura. She was the best Dachshund and she was with us for 12 years. While in San Antonio, we got Lily. We bred her and kept one of her puppies, Luna. It was after loosing Laura, November 2020 that we wanted to get another dog.
While visiting our son, daughter-in-law and new granddaughter in Las Vegas, we went to a pet store and found Molly, our first Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. We did not have experience with the breed, but the loving face she had just melted our hearts. We quickly researched the breed and found that they are the ultimate lapdog and companion. So, we adopted her and flew her home to Kentucky with us.
Shortly after we got home on July 5, 2021, she was not very energetic. We took her to the vet and found that her lungs were just utter trash. We took her to a 24 hour hospital right away on July 7, 2021. She stayed on oxygen for a couple of days and showed some improvement. She came back home with us, only to have gotten worse, so we took her back to the hospital.
Molly stayed in the hospital for a couple of weeks. She was diagnosed with Bordetella. She was not improving. We made the heartbreaking decision to euthanize. This decision is not one any pet parent wants to make. We only got about a good week with her before she passed on July 26, 2021.
This was heartbreaking. We loved her so much before even being able to share a life with her. It was also upsetting. Not only did we spend thousands to adopt her, but thousands more for the hospitalization...and we would do it again in a heart beat.
Nevada (along with many other US States) have laws protecting pet purchases up to the amount of the purchase. She had a warranty for up to the purchase price as well. We were able to regain some of the funds, but not all. We were still without a puppy. So, we contacted the store. Needless to say, we demanded another puppy at no charge. They agreed and even shipped a new puppy to us. They double and triple checked the puppy to ensure she was healthy.
Along came Piper, and she is a very healthy Blenheim girl with lineage from the UK and a grandfather who is an AKC Champion.
There was some good that came out of this, but it was heart wrenching at the same time. We just absolutely fell in love with Piper and the breed. It was day and night compared to the Dachshunds as far as personality.
So, we got another one, Bonnie (Tri-Color)...then another, Audrey (Ruby). We then decided to breed them. We love the breed so much, that we wanted to provide the best Cavaliers to other owners. We would not want anyone to go through what we went through with Molly. So, we got our Sire, Carter (Blenheim).
And it didn't stop there....along came Elodie, a Tri-Color Merle. A color that is not the breed standard (according to AKC), but she is 100% Cavalier.
We still have our Dachshunds, Lily and her daughter Luna. We have our Cavaliers; Piper, Bonnie, Audrey, Carter and Elodie. They are in our face and invade our space.
We wouldn't have it any other way!
When we have a litter, we don't put the mom and her pups in kennels, they have their own room!
Equipped with a whelping box, oxygen chamber (if necessary), ultrasound machine, first aid, weighing station and blankets galore! The puppies have about 500 square feet of room! Once the puppies are mobile, they share the rest of the house with us!
We are committed to providing the best first 10 weeks of your new furbaby's life!
